The insulation is darkened by air-movement. It acts like a filter. 

The above photo is what we call a “DAM”. When someone forcefully opened the ladder they would be inundated with pink bits of attic insulation. Notice the fiberglass chinked around the ladder has been replaced with expanding foam.
